PRESS RELEASE: CS 9600 CBCT System Recognized as a Best of Class Technology Award Winner for Second Year in a Row

ATLANTA—Carestream Dental is proud to announce that the CS 9600, its smartest and most advanced CBCT extraoral imaging system, has received a 2020 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award—the system’s second in a row. This multi-modality machine combines 2D imaging, CBCT imaging, object scanning, 3D facial scanning and optional cephalometric imaging into one powerful platform designed to meet the needs of all oral healthcare providers.

The 2020 Cellerant Best of Class Technology Award is selected by a panel of the most prominent technology leaders in dentistry: John Flucke, DDS, technology editor and chief dental editor for Dental Products Report, Marty Jablow, DMD, known as America’s dental technology coach, Paul Feuerstein, technology editor for Dentistry Today, Pamela Maragliano-Muniz, DMD, chief editor of Dentistry IQ and editorial director of DACE, Chris Salierno, DDS, Chief Editor of Dental Economics, and Lou Shuman, DMD, CAGS, founder and creator of the Best of Class Technology Award with national columns on technology in Dental Economics, Dental Products Report and Canada’s Oral Health journals.

What makes the CS 9600 a winner is its smart technology that aids in first-time-right positioning and leads to more confident diagnoses. Instead of lasers, video cameras are used to help users position patients. Then, interactive guides are projected onto the patient’s face on the system’s integrated SmartPad touchscreen; these guides walk the user through the rest of the process. Additional pre-set programs, quality control tools and auto-detection when the wrong accessory is inserted all lead to capturing the right image on the first try, no matter what the experience level of the user.

“We knew that poor positioning and user errors often led to the need for retakes, and it was one of our major goals to address when designing the CS 9600,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “However, in today’s environment—with practices having to be even more careful with their time to allow for enhanced disinfection protocols or staggered appointments—getting the right image on the first try is now even more important.”

An advanced software algorithm, called CS MAR,* gives doctors added confidence once a scan is captured by reducing the metal artifacts often caused by implants or fillings. Unique to CS MAR is a filter tool that lets clinicians toggle between live views with and without CS MAR applied to confirm their diagnosis. The system’s high-power tube captures 3D images at 120 kV* and uses intelligent filtration to further reduce starburst artifacts, all while preserving image quality without increasing dose to patient when compared to 90 kV acquisition.

Though it was just launched in 2018, even more upgrades and enhanced features were released for the CS 9600 in early 2020, making the “world’s smartest CBCT system” even smarter. A new optional cephalometric arm opens a new world of treatment capabilities for orthodontists, including high-speed scans and automatic cephalometric tracing. Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered patient positioning can automatically detect and trace the Frankfort plane for better patient alignment and increased exam precision. New Tomosharp technology compensates for imperfect patient positioning by analyzing the sharpest parts of a panoramic scan and reconstructing the best possible image. Advanced Noise Reduction (ANR) reduces the image noise on CBCT images that could interfere with identifying small anatomical details, like cortical bone edge, ligament space and soft tissues.

The CS 9600 is available in three editions with 10, 12 and 14 FOVs. An optional integrated seat can be easily swung into position or stored out of the way to accommodate all patients. To get the most out of their investment, practices can also choose to include CS UpStream, which constantly sends data back to Carestream Dental. Carestream Dental’s support team can use the system’s historical performance to prevent downtime and maximize system availability.

“It’s always an honor to help our peers identify the best technologies,” Marty Jablow, D.M.D., Best of Class panel member, said. “From the outset, an important goal of the Best of Class Awards has been to alert the dental community as to what technologies are new and important to the modern practice.”

Since the inaugural presentation in 2009, the Best of Class Technology Awards have grown to occupy a unique space in dentistry by creating awareness in the community of manufacturers that are driving the discussion as to how practices will operate now and in the future.
