ATLANTA—Carestream Dental, along with the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation, is pleased to announce that this year’s recipient of the Dr. D. Walter Cohen Teaching Award is Georgios Kotsakis, D.D.S. Kotsakis was recognized at the 100th Annual Meeting of the AAP in San Francisco, Calif., in late September. Carestream Dental has sponsored the teaching award since 2012.

Walter Cohen Teaching Award,” Vanchit John, D.D.S., M.S.D., president, AAP Foundation, said. “With Carestream Dental’s assistance, we are helping to make a career in academia a realistic option for bright, dedicated periodontists; thereby helping to keep the specialty strong. Kotsakis is in his third year of residency in the Advanced Education Program in Periodontology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. In addition to his certificate, Kotsakis is pursuing a Master of Science and a minor in biostatistics. This unique combination of clinical skill and statistical background enables Kotsakis to collaborate with other investigators, thereby increasing his rate of publication. Additionally, Kotsakis’ commitment to teaching is evidenced as he volunteers to present seminars for other students. He is also eager to work with undergraduate students and help them understand the biological and scientific basis for their treatments.
“Where would the field of periodontology be without its educators and researchers,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief commercial officer, Carestream Dental, said. “It’s important to Carestream Dental to support young periodontal students as they prepare themselves for a career in education—they’ll play a vital role in shaping future generations of periodontists.”
The AAP Foundation award is named in honor of Dr. D. Walter Cohen for his contributions to the study and practice of periodontology. Cohen established the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Dental Medicine’s first department of periodontics, serving as its first chairman, and later advancing to the roles of professor of periodontics; associate dean and then dean of academic affairs; and eventually president of the Medical College of Pennsylvania—all during his 35-year career at the university.
The teaching award assists beginning periodontal educators in launching their career with a one-time payment of $10,000 in the fourth quarter of the year.
Award candidates must be in their third year of a nonmilitary accredited periodontal post-doctoral training program in the United States, and intend to pursue a career in full-time periodontal teaching and research in the United States.
