CS 3500 Achieves High Marks in ADA Accuracy Study

A recent professional product review by the American Dental Association found the CS 3500 intraoral scanner to be among the top of its class in accuracy.

Evaluation of the Accuracy of Six Intraoral Scanning Devices: An in-vitro Investigation,” conducted by Gary Hacks, D.D.S., and Sebastian Patzelt, D.M.D., took into consideration six different intraoral scanners. For this study, a model was scanned with a very high accuracy scanner and used as a reference. Three scans were taken with each scanner. Two factors were evaluated—the “trueness” (accuracy) and “precision” of each of the data sets.

In the category of trueness, or how accurately the scanner represented the reference model, the CS 3500 performed well (9.8 ± 0.8 µm). Accuracy was determined by the “smallest deviations for the trueness measurements (± standard deviation) between the reference dataset and the various intraoral scanner datasets.” Essentially, the CS 3500’s scans varied less from the model significantly compared to other scanners.

“If you were to think in terms of a bullseye, not only were all of CS 3500’s results closer to the center, they were grouped tighter as well,” Edward Shellard, DMD, vice president, sales and marketing, said.

The study also considered precision, essentially measuring how consistent the results from the scanner were. Again, the CS 3500 performed well, coming out ahead of other scanners.

“The CS 3500 is the perfect scanner for doctors looking for precision without the price or need for powder,” Shellard said. “We’re glad to see that the ADA study confirms that. Plus, the study is an excellent source from a trusted third-party for doctors researching the best scanners for their practice.”

The CS 3500 allows practitioners to easily acquire true color, 2D and 3D images and requires no external heater or trolley system. Additionally, the CS 3500 uses open-format STL files for easy sharing and can be plugged directly into a computer’s USB—making it a truly portable. Carestream Dental’s 3D HD imaging is available with all three workflows of the CS 3500 acquisition software —restorative, orthodontic and implant.
