Carestream Dental’s CS 3600 Wins Sports Technology Award

May 14, 2018

The CS 3600 intraoral scanner has been awarded the 2018 Yahoo Sports Technology Award in the category of Most Innovative Sports Equipment or Apparel. The award acknowledges the latest technological advancements in sports each year.

The scanner was recognized for its role in creating open, digital impression files that enabled the fabrication of mouthguards for the 2017 Varsity Match between the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge. The innovative digital technology behind the scanner allowed for quick and easy scanning of 120 team members without the need for traditional impression materials.

“It’s a great honor for the CS 3600 to recognized by the Awards, which is a testament to the scanner’s versatility and innovation,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief dental officer, Carestream Dental, said. “We’re also delighted that the CS 3600 played a role in protecting players during the 2017 Varsity Match.”

The collaboration was made possible through key digital partnerships: Carestream Dental CAD/CAM specialist David Claridge coordinated scanning of the 120 players; the open .STL files were sent to Fairbanks Dental Laboratories for printing; and Rhino Mouthguards by Forecetech Mouthwear produced the finished mouthguards.

Winners of the Yahoo Sports Technology Award represent the newest technology in more than 50 sports from 30 countries. Entrants hoping to place in one of the 15 categories were evaluated by players, athletes, sports authorities and business leaders.
