PRESS RELEASE: Carestream Dental’s Innovative CS 9600 Wins Bronze Edison Award

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 11, 2019

Carestream Dental’s innovative technology has done it again. For the second year in a row, one of its extraoral imaging systems—in this case, the new CS 9600 CBCT system—has taken home a distinguished Edison Award. The CS 9600 was awarded a bronze seal in the category of Medical/Dental Diagnostics.

Each year, the Edison Awards honors companies that carry on Thomas Edison’s legacy of challenging conventional thinking with their game-changing products, services and teams. The CS 9600 was judged by more than 3,000 senior business executives; past Edison Award winners; marketing professionals; scientists; designers; engineers; and academics from across the nation.

“When the CS 9600 launched, we knew it was an absolute gamechanger for the oral health community, and we’ve been hearing as much from ecstatic clinicians,” Ed Shellard, D.M.D., chief dental officer, Carestream Dental said. “But to have experts from across multiple industries recognize the significance of the CS 9600’s innovation and life-changing capabilities is truly an honor.”

As many healthcare professionals know, errors in positioning can result in unusable images, meaning patients must be exposed to more radiation during a second exam. However, the CS 9600 features breakthrough innovations that enable users to produce high-quality images, whatever their level of experience. Video cameras, not lasers, provide live positioning feedback on the built-in SmartPad. Plus, interactive guides are superimposed onto an image of the patient’s face, so users can properly position them on the first try. Interactive positioning accessories even alert users if the wrong accessory is inserted for the type of exam indicated.

The CS 9600 also takes patient safety into consideration. Its 120 kV high-power generator can capture images at a dose equivalent to the standard 90 kV acquisition, while increasing image quality. Once the scan is taken, it can be further enhanced by patented metal artifact reduction algorithms—CS MAR. Doctors can compare images live with and without a filter for more confident diagnoses.

This advanced system was designed with doctors practicing at the highest level in mind, and provides the accurate images necessary for oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery and trauma cases. Understandably, patients receiving such care may be reluctant or even scared to accept extensive treatment. That’s why Carestream Dental has also included CS Face Scan with the CS 9600. This software provides realistic 3D facial photos and automatically superimposes them over the CBCT image. The realistic outcome helps patient better understand proposed treatment plans and aids in case acceptance. The speed, intelligence and design of the CS 9600 takes patients from their first exam and puts them on the path to healing sooner.

But beyond patient care, the CS 9600 is also equipped with intelligent features that help doctors care for their business. CS UpStream is an advanced monitoring system that tracks and records the CS 9600’s historical use. Should a practice ever require support for the CBCT system, a Carestream Dental technician could gain instant insight into how the machine has been functioning, reducing downtime and improving future use.

“Digital ‘smart’ technology has infiltrated every aspect of our lives, so why not apply that concept to the dentist’s office,” Stephane Varlet, global product line manager for extraoral imaging, Carestream Dental, said. “Over the past few years, many of Carestream Dental’s innovations have incorporated intelligent features—such as live guided feedback and automated features—that streamline workflows for doctors and practices while considering patient comfort and well-being: The CS 9600 was the natural next step.”

Matthew Greer, regional product line manager for extraoral imaging, Carestream Dental, accepted the Edison Award on Carestream Dental’s behalf during the Edison Awards Gala, held April 4, 2019, at The Capitale, in New York, New York.

This is the company’s third Edison Award for innovation. Carestream Dental’s CS 8100SC 3D imaging system received a bronze Edison Award in 2018 and the CS 3500 intraoral scanner received a bronze Edison Award in 2015.
