Cloud Technology Helps Dr. McKeta's Practice Weather the Storm

On Sept. 29, 2015, a major weather system swept across the United States—leaving heavy precipitation and dangerous conditions in its wake. By Oct. 4, the storm complex reached the South Carolina Lowcountry, where rainfall reached 500-year event levels and flooding was widespread.

Dr. Nathan McKeta, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., was well aware of the effect South Carolina weather could have on small businesses—especially their electronics. In addition to the flooding caused by the nation-wide weather system, hurricanes are a frequent concern on the coastline. However, even though Dr. McKeta was attending the Southern Association of Orthodontists (SAO) in Orlando, Fla.—far from his home and unable to check on his office—he wasn’t afraid of losing patient files or his practice’s financial data.

That’s because he chose the cloud-based version of CS OrthoTrac two years earlier.

Fortunately, Bay Tree Orthodontics—Dr. McKeta’s practice—was not affected by the flooding in the area. Even still, he knew that water damage to a server was not a possibility, as all of his practice management files are protected in a Tier 4 data center, far from the dangerous weather conditions. And even if his computers had sustained water damage, getting access to his critical information was as easy as connecting online.

“It was nice to have that peace of mind to know that, no matter what was happening at my practice during this time, all of my information was safe,” Dr. McKeta said. “It’s one less thing to worry about when running a business.”

The same benefits that protected Dr. McKeta from potential storm damage also made moving into a different office easier than it would have been had he used a premise-based practice management solution.

“When I moved offices, it was very nice to just get my computers on the Internet to connect to OrthoTrac,” Dr. McKeta said. “We didn’t have to hire someone to reconfigure or re-network the IT infrastructure.”

Being able to connect seamlessly online holds several advantages for Dr. McKeta.

“It’s nice to get into OrthoTrac at home so I can write patient letters or look up information,” he said. “When I am on vacation, I can handle any patient calls I receive remotely, and I don’t need anyone to stay behind in the office.”
